Reading your fuel numbers

Most planing boats hit their best economy just after getting on plane — usually mid-throttle. Pushing the last few knots toward wide-open throttle can double fuel burn for a marginal speed gain. NMPG (nautical miles per gallon) is the most useful figure for comparing boats and throttle settings: higher is better. On long trips, plan to arrive with one-third of your fuel still in the tank — the old "thirds rule" (a third out, a third back, a third reserve) still applies. Always recheck burn numbers after prop or load changes; an under-propped or overloaded boat burns far more than the brochure figure.
